Nvidia may have very quickly realized that most of its latest GPUs need to come with more VRAM as standard, as a new leak states that a 24GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 graphics card “will be released at the end of the year,” which is much sooner than expected. The new GPU looks as though it will be called either the RTX 5080 Ti or RTX 5080 Super, and could quickly take over from the standard 16GB 5080, which was launched earlier this year.
Largely thanks to the lack of high-end competition, my RTX 5080 review was largely favorable, gaining it a place on our best graphics card guide. However, I was also surprised to find that this expensive GPU couldn’t run our Full RT Indiana Jones and the Great Circle benchmark at 4K, with the lack of VRAM turning the game into a stuttery mess. It’s a situation that Nvidia could easily address by adding an extra 8GB to the frame buffer.
I say “easily” because in this case the technology exists to make 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM a drop-in replacement. Ye Yo Mashiro says that the “specifications are unknown” beyond the GPU having 24GB of memory, but graphics card manufacturers can use their existing RTX 5080 PCBs without any big changes, and Nvidia wouldn’t need to alter the width of the GPU’s memory interface either.
That’s all thanks to the existence of 3GB GDDR7 chips, which could replace the 2GB chips on existing RTX 5080 cards. Nvidia could also do the same with an RTX 5070 Super and give it 18GB of VRAM, which could help it become more competitive against AMD’s 16GB Radeon RX 9070 as well.
This particular rumor comes from a post in the “Graphics Card Bar” on the Baidu forums, as spotted by tech tipster harukaze5719 on X (formerly Twitter). The post is from Ye Yu Mashiro, moderator of the forum rather than a random user, who according to other users of the site, is “familiar with AIC,” suggesting that the source of the information is graphics card manufacturers.
However, as with all leaks, bear in mind that this is very much a rumor story, and hasn’t been officially corroborated by Nvidia in any way.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen rumors about a 24GB RTX 5080, though, or a new range of RTX 5000 Super cards that have more memory than the current Blackwell cards. If I were Nvidia, I would be looking at a way to do exactly this, as the comparative lack of VRAM on some of its GPUs can severely bottleneck performance in really demanding games.
This is the first time I’ve seen an RTX 5080 Super release date of later in 2025 mooted, though. Comparatively, the RTX 4080 Super came out in January 2024, over a year after the original RTX 4080 release in 2022. The other question, of course, is price. GDDR7 memory is notoriously expensive compared to GDDR6 at the moment, and the use of 3GB chips is likely to push prices even higher.
In the end, we’ll just have to wait and see whether an RTX 5080 Ti or 5080 Super does indeed turn up at the end of 2025.
