Nothing beats commandeering your own colossal hunk of metal. Whether it’s diving in and out of BT in Titanfall 2, gliding around the battlefield in Armored Core 6, or engaging in high-octane action in Mecha Break, your opportunities to fight alongside mechs are incredibly varied. New free-to-play PvPvE mech battler Steel Hunters is the next release to jump on the gigantic robot train, and it looks as intense as you’d expect. From Wargaming, the studio behind World of Tanks, Warships, and Warplanes, you can get in on the large-scale devastation right now.

With some Pacific Rim-style logic, humanity has designed Hunters (two-storey sized mechs) to help gather alien resources after a cataclysmic event. Ruthless factions use the towering robots to fight for what’s left on the now-abandoned Earth, with the chances of survival at an all-time low. Blending battle royale and extraction mechanics, Steel Hunters is a multiplayer game delivering on the ultimate Evangelion power fantasy.

At launch you’ll be able to control and customise seven different Hunters, each of which have special abilities. They have their own weapons, gear, and mods for you to play around with, so you’ll want to master them and engage in some team synergy to come out on top. You can also play across three dynamic maps, with The Last Stand game mode available to test your skills.

You’ll be glad to hear that Wargaming has no progress reset planned during or after Steam Early Access, so you can build up your arsenal as much as possible. The game’s first battle pass has also launched, and it’s free. Running until Tuesday April 29, it contains exclusive skins, rewards, boosters, and credits. Speaking of credits, the game’s first season won’t have monetization of any kind.

With the focus on working as a team, tactical decision-making, and plenty of customization options, Steel Hunters could very well be my next mecha obsession.

Wargaming has now launched Steel Hunters into free-to-play early access, and you can play it on Steam. Just head here.
