The projected cut line of seven-over is putting McIlroy at serious risk after the Masters champ opened his second round with a double bogey to move to six-over for the tournament. He’s got a ton of work to do the rest of the way to make sure he stays above the cut line.
Meanwhile, Scheffler is safely into the weekend after finished at three-over after 36 holes. He had fallen back to five-over before clawing his way back up the leaderboard.

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy in the danger zone

Scottie Scheffler lifts his leg up after hitting his second shot on the No. 12 fairway during the second round of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. on June 13, 2025.
The world’s No. 1 golfer is in serious danger of missing the cut at a major for the first time since the 2022 PGA Championship. Scheffler started on the back nine on Friday morning, shooting one over par before opening up the much more difficult front nine with a bogey.
Through 10 holes, Scottie sits at 5-over par. DataGolf currently projects a cut line of either six- or seven-over par.

That’s also troubling news for McIlroy, who sits at four-over as he prepares to tee off with the afternoon wave.
