The far reaches of space are a strong setting for strategy games. From Stellaris and Homeworld 3 through to Endless Legend 2 and Sins of a Solar Empire 2, there are plenty of genre entries that look to either realistic or fantastical versions of space as the framework for their design. This remains the case with Stellar Reach, a recently announced space strategy game in the vein of Civilization 7 that’s long been in development at a new studio formed by Creative Assembly and Ubisoft veteran, James Miller.
Stellar Reach is a 4X game that takes place in a distant future where eight different factions vie for galactic dominance. Players control a technologically advanced empire that seeks to control its stretch of the universe, rendered in 3D through a real-scale map, by researching, upgrading, and building out their power base.
Players can win a campaign by pursuing an industrial victory involving the creation of sophisticated imperial infrastructure, a prosperity victory based on improving the empire’s general well-being, or a supremacy victory focused on constructing a massive military force. As might be expected from the genre, Stellar Reach requires careful decision making as the player’s empire expands, assumes control over galactic resources, and follows one of the many possible paths to victory.
Fortunately, it won’t be long until we see how all of this comes together in the final game.
