The space flight sim genre has largely gone to the wayside. In the past, Star Wars: TIE Fighter, Wing Commander 3, and Freespace 2 were among the most popular videogames available, but, lately, it’s hard to find many other options that capture their design ethos, other than the flight segments of No Man’s Sky and Star Citizen, or the launch of an occasional throwback like Star Wars: Squadrons. Fortunately, a new indie called Alliance Peacefighter has just arrived to offer another entry to this small list.
Taking a cockpit view of the cosmos, Alliance Peacefighter is a space game where players assume the role of a rookie pilot who’s joined a squad of alien starfighters. It has a strong focus on story, eschewing open-ended exploration for a series of linear missions that follow the rookie’s place in an emerging war between two of the major powers controlling their galaxy.
The game’s Steam page describes it as “a tribute to the golden age of space sims,” citing “’90s classics like X-Wing and Wing Commander,” which makes it unsurprising, then, that its combat system centers on balancing ship power and shields as a crucial element of its space dogfights.
For those wanting to really sink into the experience, Alliance Peacefighter also offers optional VR support, as well as the ability to play it with HOTAS set-ups, too.

Alliance Peacefighter is out now, with a 10% launch discount on Steam that brings its price down to $21.59 USD / £16.19 until Wednesday June 25. Grab a copy right here.
