Minister for Information and publicity, M.P. Saminathan, said that Avalanche in the Nilgiris received 25% more rainfall this year when compared to 2024.
Speaking to reporters following a review meeting where preparedness measures undertaken by the district administration to deal with exigencies arising out of heavy rain were reviewed, Mr. Saminathan said the rain over the last few days had not been as severe as that had been recorded across the district around two weeks back. He said that due to less severe winds this time around, there is no major disruptions to traffic and public transport services.
He said that eight houses had been damaged, including two that were severely battered. Moreover, two landslips had been reported and 24 electricity poles had also become uprooted, he said, adding that the government was working round-the-clock to ensure restoration of power and water supply to affected residents.
The Minister also said that the government, through various departments, had taken stock of the damage to public and private infrastructure. He applauded the steps taken by the district administration in ensuring that people were kept safe during the rain.
On Wednesday, rain eased up in the Nilgiris, leading the Forest Department to announce the re-opening of all tourist spots in Udhagamandalam town and surrounding areas that had been closed due to the downpour. However, the department stated that Ninth Mile shooting spot and the pine forest would remain closed due to maintenance works.
