Think Buckshot Roulette was bleak? Developer Mike Klubnika has a new game in the works, s.p.l.i.t, a psychological horror which could be every bit as engrossing and grim. It casts you as a hacker in a dystopian world, hacking your way to the truth. What could possibly go wrong? You won’t have to wait long to experience it in all its gloomy glory, either; s.p.l.i.t is released on Steam next month.

From the mind behind the brilliant but brutal Buckshot Roulette, s.p.l.i.t doesn’t have you putting a gun to your chin but, going by its trailer, this psychological horror indie game isn’t going to end in a dance-off.

It casts you as an old-school hacker who, along with several other technicians, is hacking their way into an unethical superstructure. You’ll be executing this malware attack using a series of commands. Forget clicking on buttons as they flash, Simon style, you’ll have to crack your knuckles and get typing.

We’re right here for that, not least because we’ve spent a little time messing around with DOS. You’ll juggle typing in commands and solving hacking puzzles.  with chatting to your fellow (NPC) technicians in a mock IRC. accompanied by an industrial soundtrack.

Teasingly, s.p.l.i.t states that “Regardless of the outcome, your story won’t be told for decades.” We don’t expect the game to furnish us with answers, but we’ve got fingers crossed the ride will be worth it.

We won’t have to wait long to delve into s.p.l.i.t’s mysteries, either. It’s set for a July 24 release on Windows, SteamOS and Linux.

Whether you’re into monsters or meddling with computers, we’ve got you covered with the best horror games and the best hacking games.
