The basic premise of Chrono Odyssey, a gigantic fantasy MMO with a seamless open world, is far from unique. However, the game’s time travel theme and its science-fantasy premise, where an eldritch force straight out of Alien hits a medieval world, give a special flavor in a crowded space. Evidently, Steam players have found it memorable. Since the playtest opened, Chrono Odyssey has hit an in-game peak of 64,886 players (as of publication), which is impressive for a closed playtest from an unproven developer.
Like the best MMO games, Chrono Odyssey features a wide amount of things to do and classes to embody. As you explore the world, dynamic events can overtake you. You can face the game’s most powerful enemies by going through Chronogates. Combat also leans into the game’s time travel theme, letting you halt enemies in place or explore past versions of a place in the open world. The game features “trials” similar to roguelikes, where you face combat challenges under specific conditions. But you can also spend your time fishing and foraging to craft new items. Chrono Odyssey may have an emphasis on tough and dense combat encounters, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend time just hanging out in its world.

The Chrono Odyssey playtest is currently closed, but you can request access directly on the game’s Steam page. Act fast because the playtest ends on Sunday, June 22, 2025 at 11:59pm PDT and Monday, June 23, 2025 at 2:59am EDT / 7:59am BST.
