The White House, which significantly reduced the number of employees of the National Security Council (NSC), a presidential foreign and security advisory body, last month, is again recruiting personnel. This seems to be due to a growing number of diplomatic issues to be resolved, from the end of the war in Ukraine to the recent armed conflict between Israel and Iran.

Bloomberg reported on the 24th (local time), citing multiple well-informed sources, that the White House is increasing its NSC workforce again just weeks after a significant job cut. The manpower re-filling is being carried out at the behest of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as acting national security adviser.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump effectively replaced Michael Waltz, the National Security Adviser who leads the NSC, as ambassador to the United Nations last month to reduce the NSC organization.

President Trump, who wanted a small organization, is said to have isolated the NSC by reducing the number of workers from 300 earlier this year to dozens last month and directly dispatching aides such as Steve Witkoff, special envoy to the Middle East, whenever there is a diplomatic issue.

However, amid sharp conflicts between the U.S. and China, such as tariffs, rare earths, and permanent magnet disputes, current issues such as the war in Ukraine, the Israeli-Iran conflict, and the aftermath of U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities have exploded, and the number of people has begun to increase again.

Bloomberg said, “The reinforcement of the workforce comes at a time when the need to adjust U.S. foreign policy is growing as the conflict between the Middle East and Eastern Europe intensifies.”
