Nashville SC lost 1-0 to Atlanta United on Aug. 30 at Geodis Park in a critical blow to its Supporters’ Shield hopes.
Ronald Hernandez scored on a header in the 25th minute as Atlanta won its first MLS game in over three months. Nashville (15-5-9, 50 points) was unable to score despite attempting over twice as many shots as Atlanta (5-12-11, 26 points), and fell seven points behind the Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference standings.
Philadelphia beat FC Cincinnati 1-0 and now has 57 points, leading the race for the league’s best record. Nashville sits in fourth in the East behind Cincinnati and Charlotte FC, though it’s tied with Charlotte on points.
Nashville will be off until Sept. 13 when it travels to face Cincinnati.
Nashville SC vs. Atlanta United score updates
Tyler Boyd enters the game for Nashville. The winger suffered a torn ACL last July in a match against Orlando City and is making his first appearance since then. Boyd received loud cheers when his name was announced as a substitute.
Nashville still trails 1-0 with about half an hour to play, but not for lack of chances. Sam Surridge was 1-on-1 with Jayden Hibbert when his shot hit the crossbar, and Hany Mukhtar had a pair of point-blank attempts saved by the Atlanta goalkeeper.
What would have been Sam Surridge’s 21st goal of the season is called back after a VAR check ruled that the ball went off Surridge’s arm on his header off a corner kick. Atlanta United still leads Nashville SC 1-0.
Good start for the visitors as Ronald Hernandez elevates to head in a free kick taken by Steven Alzate. Well-executed set piece for Atlanta United and Nashville SC has an early hole to climb out of.
