Borderlands 4, a loot-shooter that we can all agree should’ve just been called 4derlands, is out this week. It’s been six years since the last entry to Gearbox’s long-running series of RPG shooters (three if you count Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands), and initial previews indicate it diverges from the established series formula more than any prior entry. A good thing? A bad thing? We’ll find out soon!
Here’s when Borderlands 4 releases in your time zone, plus some details about what to expect (beyond just shooting a gazillion enemies with a gazillion guns).
Borderlands 4 PC release time
On Windows PC, Borderlands 4 is out at 12 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Sept. 11, according to a blog post from publisher 2K Games. Here’s when that is in your time zone:
- 9 a.m. PDT for the west coast of North America
- 12 p.m. EDT for the east coast of North America
- 1 p.m. BRT for Brazil
- 5 p.m. BST for the U.K.
- 6 p.m. CEST for western Europe
- 1 a.m. JST on Friday, Sept. 12 for Japan
- 2 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 for the east coast of Australia
Borderlands 4 PS5 and Xbox release times
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, Borderlands 4 is out at 12 a.m. local time on Friday, Sept. 12.
There’s one exception: In North America, the game will go live at 12 a.m. EDT coast to coast. So if you’re based on the west coast, for instance, you’ll be able to play at 9 p.m. PDT on Thursday, Sept. 11.
What to expect from Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 breaks from previous Borderlands games in a few key ways. It’s fully open-world, rather than a series of interconnected wider sandboxes that defined previous games.
This time around, at launch, you’ll be able to play as four Vault Hunters:
- Vex, the Siren, who uses space magic to clone herself, summon familiars, that sort of thing.
- Harlowe, the Gravitar, who can use anti-gravity technology to put enemies in stasis (or, uh, blow them up).
- Rafa, the Exo-Soldier, who can wield a variety of bonus weapons through his action skills.
- Amon, the Forgeknight, who big and strong.
But amid all the changes and gameplay updates, Borderlands 4 still nails the fundamentals, at least according to early previous. You do what you’ve always done: Shoot a bunch of bandits and monsters on a loot loop that feeds endlessly into itself. Yes, this is a new Borderlands. It’s also the same old Borderlands.
