Apex Legends’ mid-season update brings Wildcard Mode tricks, but few Halloween treats

Apex Legends Season 25: Showdown has reached its halfway point, and the mid-season update will introduce some explosive new features to the game via the Wild Iron event and the introduction of eight new Wildcards for the game’s new Wildcard.

Starting next week, players can loot the Mythic Flatline from Rampart Care Packages. This hopped-up version of the Flatline is the result of a collaboration between weapon-design pro Rampart and explosive aficionado Fuse, and it packs a serious punch. The Mythic Flatline has two special abilities: One turns downed enemies into literal ticking time-bombs (though they can be “defused” by having a squadmate pick them up), while the other ability doubles the damage of every fifth bullet fired, and also causes an AOE blast.

As for Wildcard Mode, eight new Wildcards can be crafted at Replicators once the mid-season update goes live on Sept. 16. The following new Wildcards will be added to Replicators when the Wild Iron event goes live:

  • Good Doctor: Revive teammates with additional health and shields.
  • Extra Ordnance: The player gains the ability to carry one extra ordnance (Frag Grenade, Arc Star, or Thermite Grenade).
  • Gren-Aid: Players can mark enemies who have been damaged by their explosives.
  • Sent Packing: Frag grenade knockback is increased.
  • Shield’s Up: Gain an Epic-tier shield
  • Stowed Reload: Stowed weapons automatically reload after several seconds.
  • Crackerjack: Weapon is instantly reloaded when players knock down an enemy with it.
  • Down Bad: Enemies explode when knocked down.

Apex Legends senior technical game modes designer Chris Ruvolo confirmed to Polygon that the introduction of these new Wildcards does indeed mean that the current Wildcards are going away, including the beloved Wall-Running Wildcard. But he assured us that the Wall-Running card will make its way back to Wildcard Mode’s rotation in the future.

“You’ll see Wall-Running in the rotation in the future,” Ruvolo said. “But our goal for what Wild Cards appear in what events is going to depend on the event’s theme and its surrounding content.”

Respawn also revealed the map rotation for the second half of the season, which is listed below:

Pubs and Ranked Mode:

  • E-District
  • Kings Canyon
  • Olympus

Mixtape Mode:

  • Control: Barometer, Caustic, Labs, Lava Siphon
  • Gun Run: Estates, Monument, Skull Town, Wattson
  • TDM: Estates, Fragment, Skull Town, Zeus

Wildcard Mode:

  • Kings Canyon (Sept. 16 – Oct 14)
  • Kings Canyon After Dark (Oct. 14 – Nov. 4)

With the Oct. 14 swap to the nighttime version of the Kings Canyon map, it’s looking like players will be running and gunning (and exploding) in the dark as Halloween approaches. Unfortunately, that’s about all players can expect in terms of a Halloween celebration. Previous years saw fun limited-time modes like Shadowfall, Shadow Royale, and Trick ‘N Treat Trios, but Respawn confirmed to Polygon that the Spooky Season festivities will be a little more low-key this year.

“This year will only have the Halloween-themed Wildcard with some new Tricks and Treats worked in,” Ruvolo explained via email. “There will not be a Halloween game mode variant similar to Shadowfall or Shadow Royale.”
