Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive have announced a “major game update” is in development for the Game of the Year contender, according to a news release. Creative director Guillaume Broche noted the update is intended as a “‘thank you’ to [the game’s] fans for their support.”
The update will include a new environment for the expeditioners to explore, full of new enemies and “surprises to discover.” New challenging boss fights, costumes, and text and UI localizations will be included as well. In a video interview with Polygon, COO and producer Francois Meurisse mentioned PC “handheld compatibility” will be included as part of the update.
“I think fans will enjoy having these new moments with their beloved characters,” Meurisse said. CTO and lead programmer Tom Guillermin told Polygon that “We keep listening to the feedback that people make as they play the game, and we try to include that [feedback] on our roadmap.” He pointed to the latest patch including a Battle Retry Prompt, allowing players to immediately hop back into a boss fight after a failed attempt, as an example of the studio updating the game based on player feedback.
The announcement also included new artwork ahead of the update. It shows a variety of children’s toys, including an Esquie figure strewn about a hardwood floor. Those who’ve made it deep into the game will surely spot some Easter eggs hidden within.
“The response to our game has been nothing short of incredible. We spent years working on our dream project, and to know it has resonated with fans around the world in such a powerful way is both wonderful and overwhelming,” Broche said in a statement. “We’re so grateful to our fans for their love of the world we created, for sharing their own fan art and music covers, for wearing their best Baguette cosplays to conventions, and for being incredibly supportive of our game.”
Sandfall and Kepler also revealed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has hit another sales milestone. It’s now sold more than 5 million copies across platforms since its April release. Its soundtrack has also racked up numbers, with over 333 million (of course) track streams across various platforms. It spent “over 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical & Classical Crossover Album charts within that timeframe, and even reached No. 1 on iTunes Top 100 Albums Chart in nine different countries.”
Here are the full details for the pending update, which will be made available for free on all platforms. Though the update doesn’t have a release date yet, Meurisse told Polygon it would be out in the “upcoming month[s].” Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available now on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
