Sri Lanka’s Vishmi Gunarathne stretchered off after knee injury at Women’s World Cup, but cleared to bat again as team faces South Africa.

Star Sri Lanka batter Vishmi Gunarathne had to be stretchered off the field after she copped a nasty blow to her knee while diving for a run, putting her team’s campaign at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in jeopardy. She was seen wincing in extreme pain after suffering the blow.
On the fourth delivery of the fifth over from Marizanne Kapp, Vishmi stepped down the track and nudged the ball to mid-on, taking off for a single. The fielder attempted a direct hit but missed the stumps.
The throw sailed wide and struck Vishmi on the inside of her left knee, missing the pad flap and hitting the bone. She collapsed, clutching her leg in visible pain.
The physio rushed to Vishmi’s side and she was stretchered off the field. Star batter Hasini Perera walked out to bat in her place. Watch the video here:
Later, Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that Vishmi had no fractures and would be available to bat again if required.
“She is currently receiving treatment and medical assessments have confirmed that no serious injury has been sustained. Team management has confirmed that Gunaratne will return to bat,” the statement read.
Vishmi showed good form during her brief stint at the crease, scoring 12 runs off 16 deliveries, including two fours. She started with a boundary through backward point off Kapp and added her second four through the covers off pacer Masabata Klaas.
Vishmi, who debuted at 16 three years ago, had a slow start to her maiden Women’s World Cup, scoring 11 and 10 against India and England. She bounced back with a 42-run knock in the rain-affected game against New Zealand in Colombo.
Notably, the match against South Africa was also paused due to rain. At the time of the break, Sri Lanka were at 46/2 after 12 overs, with Kavisha Dilhari and Harshitha Samarawickrama on the crease.
