Mumbai Meteors and Bengaluru Torpeodes will meet in the final of the fourth season of Prime Volleyball League on Sunday, October 26, after both sides secured semifinal wins at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, Hyderabad on Friday.
Shubham stars as Mumbai defeats Goa Guardians
Mumbai Meteors defeated Goa Guardians 15-8, 15-8, 16-14 to book a spot in the final of the Prime Volleyball League. Shubham Chaudhary was named the Player of the Match. Mumbai will play the winner of the second semifinal between Bengaluru Torpedoes and Ahmedabad Defenders.
Goa showcased its attacking intent early on with Nathaniel Dickinson’s spike and Rohit Yadav’s power-packed serve. However, Goa’s defence struggled against consistent attacks from Mumbai’s Shubham Chaudhary and Amit Gulia. Dickinson’s spike helped Goa win the Super Point, but Mumbai’s disciplined formation edged it ahead.
Prince tried to counter-attack for Goa from the middle zone, but Karthik kept Mumbai stable, and smart play from Shubham minimised Mumbai’s errors. Goa made a change in formation, bringing on setter Aravind to turn the momentum. A Super Serve from LM Manoj provided a moment to celebrate for the Guardians, before Prince’s overhit shot cost Goa a Super Point, helping Mumbai take a two-set lead.
Amit’s Super Serve continued Mumbai’s dominance while adding more pressure on Goa’s shoulders. Petter Ostvik won the battle against Prince in the third set, helping Mumbai dominate the middle zone. Vikram won a Super Point, giving a glimmer of hope to the Goa fans. But just when it looked like Goa would be able to fight back, Karthik blocked Chirag Yadav’s spike, helping his side win the game and reach the final.
Sandeep-led Bengaluru bests Ahmedabad Defenders to final spot
Bengaluru Torpedoes defeated the Ahmedabad Defenders 10-15, 15-11, 15-13, 15-13 in the second semi-final of the day. Sandeep was named the Player of the Match.
Bengaluru started strong with Jalen Penrose making an immediate impact. Sethu tested the opposition from the service line. Nandhagopal began Ahmedabad’s counter-attack. Ahmedabad’s defence woke up, and Angamuthu’s block on Sethu helped them win a super point and take the lead.
Trailing behind, Bengaluru activated the middle blocker Mujeeb, who did well to relieve some of the pressure with strong attacks. Sethu’s Super Serve shifted the momentum, and Bengaluru brought the game back to level pegging with Penrose’s cross-body spike.
Sethu kept exploiting tiny gaps on the opposition’s court, while libero Midhunkumar defended well on the back court. Muthusamy’s smart captaincy and play from the middle kept the pressure up on Bengaluru. Service pressure from Penrose led to the Torpedoes getting another two points from a super serve. Despite a fightback from Ahmedabad, Jishnu’s block on Batsuuri helped the Torpedoes take control of the game.
Joel Benjamin’s clever play against Akhin helped the Torpedoes at a crucial stage. Setter Sandeep made efficient passes, and Bengaluru completely shut down Batsuuri, forcing Muthusamy Appavu to search for alternative options in attack. Jishnu made a crucial block against Batsuuri once again to earn the Torpedoes a super point. With Joel’s spike, Bengaluru earned a spot in the final.
