Dharmendra, the name that once guaranteed box office success, still commands the same love and devotion from fans who gather just to glimpse him. Yet, long before he became the heartthrob of millions, there was a time when he stood outside someone else’s gate, starry-eyed and trembling with admiration.

His love for his idol was so deep that it once drove him to cross all limits, even stepping into a superstar’s home without permission!

Dharmendra’s journey in cinema didn’t begin with roaring success. His early films failed to make an impact, but soon, his very name was enough to draw crowds to theatres.

His charm, physique, and effortless acting made him one of Bollywood’s most adored stars. Yet, before he became a household name, a young Dharmendra once found himself in an unusual situation — breaking into a Bollywood superstar’s home!

This surprising story was revealed by Dharmendra himself in Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow. Though the two actors never shared screen space, Dharmendra always regarded Dilip Kumar as his elder brother and lifelong inspiration.

Recalling his early days, Dharmendra wrote that when he arrived in Mumbai in 1952, he was still studying in Ludhiana and had an almost devotional admiration for Dilip Kumar.

One day, unable to resist, he stood outside the actor’s home, spotted a wooden staircase leading up to a room, and quietly climbed it, unaware that his idol was asleep inside.

“When I wasn’t an actor,” Dharmendra said, “I went in without asking anyone and stood outside his room. He was sleeping — slim, handsome. But when he opened his eyes and saw a stranger staring at him, he screamed. I was so terrified that I ran away immediately!”

Dharmendra later revealed that he had met Dilip Kumar’s sister during a talent competition in 1958, which is how he got connected to the legendary actor.

Though his debut film Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere was a flop, Dharmendra soon rose to become one of Hindi cinema’s most successful and beloved heroes.

He went on to deliver countless hits, and he carved his own place in cinematic history, becoming an icon of charisma, romance, and strength.

The legendary actor is currently admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
