Diablo 4 Season 15 has begun after some initial server struggles forced a delayed start. Players have begun diving into the new update, which celebrates 30 years of Blizzard’s legendary series of action RPGs. Alongside the arrival of all three Prime Evils, who are making a special appearance given that we’ll now be moving onto Diablo 5 in 2029, we were promised some additional surprises. It didn’t take long for die-hard blasters to start finding them, and they include the full return of old-school Diablo 2 Runewords.
Runewords were introduced to Diablo 4 with the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, but they were a little different from their classic D2 counterparts. Where those were typically used to craft special unique items, Diablo 4 Runes instead fall into one of two categories – Ritual Runes, which generate ‘Offering’ based on actions you take, and Invocation Runes, which spend that Offering to grant specific effects. By combining a pair of them in your gear sockets, you get a bonus that triggers when you do certain things. It’s a neat system, but a far cry from what players remembered.
Upon finding new unique Runes among their Season 15 loot, streamer ‘DiEoxidE’ decided to test them in the Horadric Cube, Diablo 4’s main crafting tool that was added in the Lord of Hatred DLC. By combining a white body armor with the ‘Tal’ and ‘Eth’ Runes, he was able to transform the chestpiece into ‘Stealth,’ an old Diablo 2 unique that was crafted back in the day using that exact same Runeword combination. The process was highlighted in a video below by another Diablo 4 streamer, ‘Wudijo.’
Armed with this information and a longstanding knowledge of the various Diablo 2 Runewords, it didn’t take long for a lot more classic items to start being discovered. Some of them require several more Runes to be combined in the Horadric Cube, such as the Call to Arms’ Sword with ‘AmnRalMalIstOhm’ (that’s a total of five). We live in an era where comprehensive patch notes (and a desire to tell players all the cool things in your new update so they come back and play) often mean there are few surprises left to discover. It’s quite refreshing to already have something like this pop up, and certainly feels like a worthy inclusion to celebrate 30 years of Diablo.
Does that mean we’ve got even more secrets to uncover? It’s certainly possible. While there’s reason to worry that Diablo 5’s announcement means D4 is now on the back burner, new features such as this, along with the promise of the new Diablo 4 Amazon class coming next year, are a reassurance that it’s not time to file the current game away just yet.
