Alexander Zverev begins his US Open quest against Alejandro Tabilo, looking to extend his form into New York.

Alexander Zverev, of Germany, returns to Carlos Alcaraz, of Spain, during the Cincinnati Open in Mason on Aug. 16, 2025.
Fresh off a semifinal showing in Cincinnati, third seed Alexander Zverev begins his US Open 2025 campaign against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. Zverev has been in red-hot form throughout the season, rarely bowing out before the last 16 of any tournament. However, there were some inconsistency issues, especially in Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, and Wimbledon, where all were early exits.
Zverev lifted the trophy in Munich, defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets, while also reaching the finals of the Australian Open and Stuttgart, falling narrowly to Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz. Semifinal runs in Halle, Toronto, and most recently Cincinnati, along with quarterfinal runs in Argentina, Rio, Rome, and Roland Garros, underline his remarkable steadiness. Statistically, he has fired 444 aces this year, winning 75% of his first-serve points, while converting 42% of 417 break point opportunities.
Across the net, Tabilo comes in as the underdog but with an experience of his own. The No. 2 Chilean owns two ATP titles, both captured last season in Auckland and Mallorca, and has added six Challenger trophies and three ITF crowns to his resume. This year, however, has been more modest. His standout moment came in Monte Carlo, where he stunned Novak Djokovic en route to the third round before bowing out to Grigor Dimitrov in three sets. He also made a Challenger semifinal in Prostejov. In main-draw events, Tabilo has hit 95 aces, winning 68% of first-serve points and converting 35% of 122 break point opportunities.
