My favorite part of this job is recommending videogames that look absolutely wicked. Every once in a while I’ll find something with truly unforgettable style and an incredible premise that I have to share with you, and that’s what I’m here to do right now. The Explorator is a new, atmospheric FPS that’s just launched via Steam Early Access, and you definitely don’t want to miss it. With gorgeous, hand-crafted 2D animations, a mysterious atmosphere, and delightful characters, get ready to get lost in the superb vibes.

In The Explorator, you set foot on the most dangerous island in the world, known as Ospolis. Legend has it that the mythical city of Atlantis lies beneath the surface, but the entire landmass has been overrun by goblins and monsters. So it’s up to you to explore, help Ospolis’ people, and get to the bottom of all the island’s mysteries. Everything might look truly tranquil, thanks to the stunning 2D visuals and cel-shaded style, but you don’t want to get caught out.

Luckily for you, then, The Explorator is also an FPS game. Inspired by Stalker and Metro, you need to venture into the non-linear, semi-open world and scavenge for equipment, all while completing side quests and finding secrets. Ospolis isn’t a friendly island, with toxic gas, thunder, lava, and chemical explosions all getting in your way.

If, like me, you adore getting lost in vibrant worlds, then The Explorator is certainly worth checking out. With colossal trees, strange architecture, lush zones, and a focus on scale, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Sure, there’s a bit of The Witness and maybe even Journey about it, but it’s already clear that The Explorator is going to have a lot more going on under the surface.

The Explorator is available in Steam Early Access right now. You can find it here.
