During the great Bayern Munich injury crisis from a while back, the club saw half its defence bow out. It seemed like a curse hit, as Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito, and later, Kim Min-jae, were all afflicted with varied injuries. Jamal Musiala too was injured in the same period.
A cruciate ligament tear is perhaps amongst the worst injuries — it can sideline a player for months with an extremely painful recovery and at its worst, can be career-ending. Alphonso Davies picked up an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear during international break in March, while playing for the Canadian national team against the United States. The tear was diagnosed only on his return to club football. He underwent surgery promptly and it was told that he would be out for months.
As the left-back courses through recovery, he spoke about his prospects of returning to football. “I’m doing well. The recovery is going good. I’m looking forward to getting back on the pitch,” he said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
Speaking on his likely return, he delivered some bad news. “That’s going to take a while. Probably November or something,” he lamented.
While this was anticipated, adding a timeline makes this all too real. He will be out for almost the entirety of the Hinrunde and a good chunk of the earlier stages of the Champions League and DFB Pokal, along with the Club World Cup. Six months from now in recovery should hopefully be sufficient to help him get back to his best shape.
