Chennai RMC issues heavy rain warning for 5 districts in Tamil Nadu due to cyclonic circulation.
Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a heavy rain alert for five districts in Tamil Nadu on 14 May, citing adverse weather conditions linked to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea.
According to the RMC, the districts of Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tirupattur are expected to experience heavy rainfall as the system strengthens. Meteorologists explained that the interaction between easterly and westerly winds in the lower atmosphere over parts of South India is creating favourable conditions for widespread showers.
Widespread rain and thunderstorms predicted
The forecast suggests that light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds, is likely at a few locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on 11 May.
Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds reaching up to 40 km/h are anticipated across several areas on 13 and 14 May.
Further alerts for other districts
A heavy rain warning has also been issued for pockets of Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, and the hilly areas of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul districts. Moderate rainfall is expected in Chennai over the coming days.
Rainfall records and monsoon update
The RMC noted that many parts of Tamil Nadu received rainfall earlier this week. Thammampatti in Salem district recorded the highest rainfall, measuring 11 cm, while Tiruvallur, Sivaganga, and Villupuram districts also reported showers.
Within Chennai, Valasaravakkam and Nerkundram each registered rainfall of up to 11 cm. Tamil Nadu has so far recorded 14 percent excess rainfall during the current northeast monsoon season, with cumulative rainfall reaching 447 mm, surpassing the seasonal average of 393 mm.
Chennai has recorded 845 mm of rainfall to date, 16 percent above the normal level, while Coimbatore reported a significant surplus of 47 percent.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable districts to remain alert and to follow safety guidelines as weather conditions continue to evolve.
