DEXTER – Big plays made the difference in the Ruidoso Warriors’ game in the Class 3A state playoffs at the Dexter Demons on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the big plays benefitted Dexter, which won 57-6.
Dexter (9-1) made a statement early, as Rigo Regalado got the handoff from Demon quarterback CJ Granados and ran 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff.
It was their first of five scoring plays of 30 yards or more, as the Demons either found holes in the Ruidoso line or in the Warrior secondary.
The biggest play of the game came at the end of the first half. Ruidoso (5-7) turned the ball over on downs with less than a minute left and later sacked Granados to push the Demons back to their own 18-yard line. But a razzle-dazzle play saw Matthias Salas throw a halfback pass to Regalado, who outran the Warriors 82 yards for the score as time expired.
Ruidoso’s only score came with 4:24 left in the second quarter, when Mason Fikany connected with Michah Hernandez from 15 yards out.
