Videogames love to explore the post-apocalypse. From The Last of Us to Nier: Automata, from Stalker to Horizon Zero Dawn, we’ve encountered an earth almost bereft of humanity more times than I care to count. But if you say “post-apocalyptic game” to a random person on the street, chances are there’s only one title on their lips: Fallout. The iconic RPG series has had many iterations, including a recent TV show that captured the public consciousness, but fans aren’t stopping there. One group has taken its love of the game a step further and created Fallout: Bakersfield, a mod of the original Doom game from 1993.

One of the first and best FPS games ever made, it goes without saying that Doom is a bona fide classic. Since its launch in 1993, we’ve seen savvy fans mod it in all manner of ways, even making it playable on almost any appliance with an electric current, from toasters to refrigerators. If you’ve ever wondered what Fallout would look like rendered as a Doom-like boomer shooter instead of an isometric RPG, Fallout: Bakersfield makes it a reality. You might remember last month’s re-reveal trailer, and now we have our best look at it yet in an extended gameplay video.

As you can see in the new gameplay above, developers Alexander and Denis Berezin have recreated the iconic Fallout setting of Bakersfield in the Doom engine, GZDoom. According to an update last month, the pair say that the game is around 60% complete, and they anticipate it releasing in 2027.

However, it’s not all been plain sailing. Fallout: Bakersfield was first announced in 2022, and many fans thought it had simply disappeared, forgotten by its devs, until last month’s surprise update. However, there’s still a while to go yet.

Still, the new gameplay deep dive gives us enough to chew on for now. The classic Doom UI has had a Pipboy-style makeover, and shooting Ghouls has never looked better. We’ll have to wait to explore Necropolis for ourselves from a new perspective, but at least we’re seeing a steadier stream of progress updates to tide us over.

If you can’t wait two years to put a pixelated power fist through a Super Mutant’s face, why not check out some of the best games like Fallout available on PC? If you’re more into the Doom side of things, the best old games (sorry) will have you covered.
