Hollow Knight: Silksong‘s Sandcarver is one of the more challenging hunter’s log entries to fill out, since there’s seemingly no way to engage with the foe without taking environmental damage. There is a way, though. It just involves a specific tool and a detour through Greymoor.
Below, we explain where to find Silksong‘s Sandcarvers and how to defeat them to unlock their hunter’s log entry. And if you’re having trouble finding your way in Pharloom, head over to our Silksong interactive map to get your bearings.
Where to find Sandcarvers in Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sandcarvers are the worms that swarm in the Blasted Steps’ sandy areas when you approach. This is the only area we’ve found them in, and the hunter’s log considers them separate from the giant worms that fall out of the ceiling in the Wormways area.
How to defeat Sandcarvers in Hollow Knight: Silksong
The only way we’ve found to reliably defeat Sandcarvers involves chucking a Pimpillo bomb into the sands where the critters swarm. It took two bombs to destroy enough Sandcarvers for the journal entry’s requirements, though you can’t actually see the worms as it happens. The Pimpillo bounces into the sand, explodes, and you’ll notice the hunter’s log icon appear in the screen’s bottom-left corner the first time. Throw another bomb, and you should see the icon appear again, with a slash through it that indicates a completed journal entry.
We tried using the Threefold Pin, Longpin, and Sting Shard tools before hurling bombs, and nothing happened. It’s possible you can use other tools to defeat Sandcarvers, but the Pimpillo seems to be the easiest and most reliable way.
Where to get the Pimpillo bomb in Hollow Knight: Silksong
If you don’t have the Pimpillo yet, you can get it at a crafting table in the northwestern corner of Greymoor. The table is tucked away in a little nook above Yarnaby’s home. You’ll need a piece of Craftmetal — buy one from Pebb in Bone Bottom for 60 rosary beads if you haven’t already — and the cling jump ability to reach the table.

While you’re exploring and completing quests like the “Rite of the Pollip” wish or “Silver Bells” request, make sure to spend some time progressing the main story as well, as you’ll get some upgrades that make battles easier. After “The Threadspun Town” quest, for instance, you can upgrade your needle to deal more damage.
