Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 has become the biggest box-office success story of 2025, reportedly crossing Rs 800 crore worldwide and dethroning Chhaava from the top spot. The film’s success has turned into a nationwide celebration, with audiences still flocking to theatres weeks after its release. Following this incredible run, the makers have now officially confirmed the film’s upcoming OTT release, hinting that the wait for its digital premiere might soon be over.

The film will premiere on October 31, on Amazon Prime Video, which recently dropped a new poster featuring Rishab Shetty in his fierce, divine avatar. Fans, however, appear divided, while some are eager to relive the cinematic experience at home, others feel the film should enjoy a longer theatrical run given its strong box-office hold. The movie will available to stream in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam languages.

Kantara: Chapter 1 is officially 2025’s highest-grossing Indian film, earning over Rs 800 crore worldwide. According to Hombale Films, the movie grossed Rs 809 crore globally, surpassing Chhaava’s lifetime total of ₹807 crore.
However, trade tracker Sacnilk has reported a slightly lower figure of around Rs 775 crore, pointing to a minor discrepancy in reported numbers. Regardless, both figures made Kantara Chapter 1 as a record-smashing success.In its first two weeks alone, the film brought in Rs 717 crore worldwide, with another Rs 92 crore added in its third week. In India, it has collected an impressive Rs 563.50 crore net, showcasing exceptional audience retention even three weeks after release.

The overseas response has been equally strong, with collections of about $13 million, proving that the movie’s appeal extends far beyond Indian shores. To widen its global footprint further, an English-language version of the film is expected to release later this month.

A prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, the story delves into the origins of the Daiva Kola or Bhuta Kola tradition, a spiritual ritual deeply rooted in the Tulu culture of coastal Karnataka. Set in pre-colonial India, the film follows Berme, a tribal leader (played by Rishab Shetty), who stands up against the oppressive aristocracy to protect the dignity and beliefs of his people. The movie stars Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, and Pramodh Shetty in key roles, with music composed by Ajaneesh Loknath. Backed by Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 is praised for its intense storytelling, mesmerising visuals, and deep-rooted portrayal of faith and folklore.
