Alexander Isak made his first appearance of the season as a second-half substitute as Sweden lost away to Kosovo in World Cup qualifying.

The British record signing, who joined Liverpool for £125m from Newcastle on deadline day, was an unused substitute for Friday’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia.

But he replaced Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga for the final 18 minutes in Pristina – with his side 2-0 down.

He was booked for clashing with Kosovo’s Fidan Aliti and had three shots, two on target.

That was Isak’s first football match since May, having refused to play for the Magpies in pre-season friendlies or at the start of the season.

The hosts won thanks to first-half goals from Elvis Rexhbecaj and Vedat Muriqi to earn their first points in Group B.

Kosovo’s Lindon Emerllahu was sent off in injury time for his second yellow card.

Switzerland top the group on six points, with Sweden in third place on one point.

After the Slovenia game, Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson explained why Isak had been left on the bench.

“He had only done three training sessions with the team,” he told Viaplay. “He had no pre-season with the team and of course no playing time.

“The risk was probably a bit too great to use him today.”
