Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered standard and deluxe editions are currently 33% off for a short time via Fanatical. For the delicious price of $33.49 / £33.49 you could be roaming the land of Cyrodiil in no time. Work toward closing the gates of Oblivion, or if you’re like me, you’ll ignore the main storyline completely and go off to join the Dark Brotherhood, become a vampire, then devampirize yourself, and eat a bunch of cheese. This beloved prequel to Skyrim is not to be missed.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is one of the best RPG games, hands down. Despite being a remaster of a 2006 game, I think it gives some of the best fantasy games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring a run for their money.

Oblivion Remastered has been upgraded to run on Unreal Engine 5 and does more than slap on extra brightness. The game runs smoother, and its textures have been dramatically upgraded. Emperor Uriel Septim VII, voiced by Patrick Stewart, went from looking like a blurry potato with a flat head to a man with distinct creases, wrinkles, and defined facial expressions. Water shimmers like glass as the sunlight hits it, and glossy grass sways in the breeze. This 19-year-old game has certainly had a glow-up.

The core game mechanics are faithful to the original version, meaning that it doesn’t hold your hand and invites you to explore as a requirement rather than an option. You’ll still find the same skill-based progression and real-time combat that delighted fans of the original. My personal favourite remains the spell mechanic, where you can craft your spells and embrace the mage life. I love the ones that make you go super fast the most.

Fear not, the storyline of Oblivion Remastered is the same, with plenty of side quests too. In her Oblivion Remastered review, Nat Smith says, “there’s an organic purpose to your pursuits that often means you can never be sure where you’ll end up a few hours later.” She goes on to say, “like all the best sandbox games, you’re free to go wherever the wind takes you.” This allows you to make the most of the open world. If you want to worship cheese while the world is on the brink of destruction, go for it.

With the 33% discount that Fanatical is offering, you can fulfill your dream of purchasing Oblivion Remastered without the $49.99 / £49.99 price tag. Because let’s face it, Bethesda delivered on this one all bar the price.
