The humble Minecraft leash, used for collecting stray mobs and leading them back to your homestead, has already been totally retooled. But now, with new and returning fans flocking to Mojang’s monolithic builder thanks to the Minecraft movie, one of the most key – but often overlooked – pieces of gear in the entire blocky world has once again been reimagined. Courtesy of the latest Minecraft update (or Snapshot 25w18a, to give it its full name), the leash recipe has been made a lot more accessible. Combined with the earlier changes, managing your mobs has never been simpler.
Bees. Chickens. Rabbits. Pigs. Camels. Hoglins. Your Minecraft mobs all have one thing in common: if you want to bring them back to your base, or anywhere in fact, you need a leash. The previous update made it possible to connect multiple creatures to a single leash, sparing you the ardor of repeated journeys if you want to retrieve, say, an entire herd of striders. But of course, you still have to make the leash. Thankfully, courtesy of the latest Minecraft update, the elusive slime ball is no longer part of the equation.
Until now, making a Minecraft leash required four pieces of string and a slimeball. That meant either finding a slime deep underground somewhere or getting a panda to sneeze on you. Now, the building game has changed. You don’t need the slimeball to make a leash anymore – instead, you just need five pieces of string.
And it’s that simple. A couple of weeks ago, you had to go farming for slimeballs and then lead your animals one by one by one. Now, just tie the string together, and you can corral mobs en masse. The latest update also changes the recipe for the dried ghast block: instead of a bone block, you’ll now need the soul sand block. If that sounds tricky, you can now get dried ghast by bartering with the Piglins.
