Imagine if you took the core top-down action of League of Legends or Dota 2 and transposed it into a vast, Civilization 7-style hex-grid map, where all your units were real players. It sounds ambitious. But We Will Be Gods developer Cult of the North is making it a reality, and is now looking for willing participants as it prepares to unleash its first round of pre-alpha testing. If you think you’re up to the task, you can join the line to try this new free Steam game ahead of its full launch.
We Will Be Gods brings large player groups together for long-term wars that can last for months. As mortals vying for control in Hamarvast, the land of the gods, you’ll have to work together to gather resources, build defenses, fortify your lands, and spread your influence. This blend of expansion and strategy feels reminiscent of the best 4X games. Where things diverge is that each player directly controls a hero class, making the action feel closer to a MOBA; battlemages wade into the fray with giant hammers, bonedancers bring numbers to the battlefield, and priestesses cast spells to turn the tide in your favor.

Each class has a range of skills available to them as they level up, allowing you to engage troublemakers, with Cult of the North promising “thousands of players” in its biggest battles. Of course, you can get one step ahead of your opponents by scouting their plans and laying down powerful defensive structures such as towers that will fire on nearby foes. Adding another layer of strategy, such structures can be built anywhere, but are only able to be repaired if you place them within your kingdom’s borders.
Caught your attention? Then there’s a chance to join the action and help shape the final form of We Will Be Gods, which is set to launch as a free Steam game when it’s fully ready. “No early access, no founder or access passes,” Cult of the North explains. “Just sign up on our home page and we’ll invite you to play when the time comes. If the current test is full, don’t worry, we’ll call you up for the next available one.”
The first We Will Be Gods alpha playtest is set to start Saturday May 17. This first round will be fairly limited in numbers, but future tests will increase the capacity. You can sign up now via the Cult of the North website if you want to take part.
