The Pune Municipal Corporation has sanctioned a two-lane connecting ramp at SPPU Chowk, promising smoother travel from Senapati Bapat Road towards Aundh, Baner, and Pashan.
Pune: In a move hailed as good news for Punekars, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) standing committee has approved the construction of a new two-lane connecting ramp to link the SPPU Chowk flyover with the grade separator on Senapati Bapat Road.
Officials say the addition is set to dramatically ease congestion for commuters heading towards Aundh, Baner, and Pashan.
Dinkar Gojare, head of PMC’s project department, highlighted the ramp’s significance.
“This ramp will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks at SPPU Chowk. It will give direct connectivity from Senapati Bapat Road to Aundh, Baner, and Pashan,” he said.
The SPPU Chowk flyover, reconstructed during the COVID-19 period, features a two-storey design: the lower level handles regular vehicular traffic, while the upper level carries the Shivajinagar–Hinjewadi metro line.
The prior flyovers had to be dismantled to make way for the metro infrastructure, and the new structure has since been instrumental in streamlining movement across this critical junction.
In tandem with the ramp, PMC engineers are planning a grade separator at the intersection to further streamline traffic flow toward Aundh. Initially, proposals envisioned the separator beginning from Government Polytechnic College.
However, to enhance efficiency, engineers trimmed the proposed length by approximately 300 metres and introduced the connecting ramp, allowing vehicles from Senapati Bapat Road to directly access the flyover toward Baner and Pashan.
The dual enhancements—ramp plus grade separator—aim to decongest one of Pune’s most jam-prone zones, especially during peak hours.
Commuters travelling from the bustling Senapati Bapat Road corridor to residential and commercial hubs like Aundh, Baner, and Pashan can soon expect a smoother, faster commute.
The decision, taken at Friday’s standing committee meeting, underlines PMC’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility for Pune’s citizens. With construction anticipated to begin soon, Punekars can look forward to significant relief at the SPPU Chowk chokepoint in the near future.
