IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A second person has been arrested in the murder of an Irondequoit family of four. Luis Soriano, 31, will remain in the custody of the Dominican Republic until he’s extradited.
He and his brother Julio Sorinao are accused of killing two children, two and 4, and their parents in their home on Knapp Avenue on Aug. 31, 2024. Police say the father was the cousin of the Soriano brothers.
U.S. Marshals arrested Luis Soriano on Wednesday after he finished his shift at a hotel call center in Punta Cana, a resort town on the island’s eastern tip. Marshals say collaboration between officials in New York State, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic led to the arrest.
Marshals say Luis Soriano fled to Puerto Rico after the murders, then traveled by boat to the Dominican Republic after learning officials were looking for him. He will face four counts of murder and narcotics charges once he’s extradited.
Police found the bodies in the basement of the home when responding to a fire. Irondequoit’s police chief said that, in his 32 years on the job, he had never seen anything so horrific as the murders.
Julio Soriano was arrested a week after the murders. He was indicted on murder, burglary, arson, and kidnapping charges and pleaded not guilty in court. Investigators believe the brothers, originally from the Dominican Republic, came into the U.S. through Puerto Rico to carry out the targeted attack. Investigators haven’t shared details on the possible motive.
James Settles, who is a neighbor of the home said he is very pleased they have caught him.
Berkeley Brean: “I supposed every time you leave the house and you look across the street you are reminded of what happened there?”
Settles: “Everyday. Everyday.”
Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters said this case is still active, but this is it for local arrests. He also said they got information that pointed them to a place in the Dominican Republic and had an arrest plan ready to go for Wednesday.
In a statement, Wilmer Ocasio-Ibarra of the U.S. Marshal for Puerto Rico said:
“Without a doubt, this is an exceptional job by the Deputy U.S. Marshals of the U.S. Marshals Service, both nationally and internationally. It is truly worthy of recognition, and our communities should feel reassured knowing that this fugitive has been captured and will face justice. Every case is important to us, but this one not only deeply impacted our communities in New York and Puerto Rico, it shook our entire nation. The horrific nature of this crime, which resulted in the tragic death of a family, including two innocent children, rocked the very foundation of our society governed by law and order.”
A memorial remains at the house. There is also a notice posted to the door by a mortgage company saying it considers the house vacant and abandoned.
