‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Tops Total Disc Sales for Third Week; ‘Anora’ Tops Blu-ray Chart

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Paramount Home Entertainment’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remained No. 1 on the Circana VideoScan chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, the week ended May 3.

The latest sequel based on the Sega video game series finds Sonic and friends clashing with Shadow the Hedgehog, while Dr. Robotnik teams with his long-lost grandfather to deploy a superweapon against the Earth.

However, while Sonic 3 maintained the overall disc lead in its third week on shelves, it was surpassed on the dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart, where it was No. 4, and 4K Ultra HD disc chart, where it was No. 3.

The week’s top newcomer, at No. 1 on the Blu-ray chart, and No. 2 on the overall and 4K charts, was the Criterion Collection’s release of Best Picture Oscar winner Anora.

The sexually explicit indie darling, which earned $20.5 million from U.S. theaters, tracks the story of a Brooklyn stripper’s impulsive marriage to a client who turns out to be the son of a Russian oligarch, whose goons soon arrive to break them up. It sold 69.1% as many copies in its first week as Sonic 3 did in its third. HD versions accounted for 85% of total Anora unit sales, with 27% from regular Blu-ray and 58% from the 4K edition.

No. 3 overall, and No. 7 on the Blu-ray chart, was another newcomer, Sony Pictures’ Paddington in Peru. The third film in the franchise finds the famed bear searching Peru for his aunt Lucy, and earned $45.8 million at U.S. theaters. It sold 68.6% as many total copies as Sonic 3, just a half percentage behind Anora. However, only 37% of its unit sales came from the Blu-ray edition.

In a demonstration of just how niche collecting movies on disc has become, the No. 4 overall seller was the 1972 concert film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, newly released on Blu-ray by Legacy Recordings, which accounted for 91% of its total sales. It was No. 2 on the Blu-ray chart, selling nearly 96% as many copies as Anora‘s Blu-ray editions. Its high finish was even more astonishing considering it was released toward the end of the reporting week, on Friday, May 2, rather than the usual Tuesday, so it had only one day’s sales to track for the chart.

The No. 5 overall seller was Universal’s Last Breath, a thriller starring Woody Harrelson as a stranded deep-sea diver. It earned $21 million at the domestic box office but had just 15% of its total sales come from Blu-ray.

No. 6 overall was the Clint Eastwood cop classic Dirty Harry, thanks to a new 4K edition from Warner. It was No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart and No. 1 on the 4K chart.

Elsewhere on the chart, the disc release of the Paramount+ movie Star Trek: Section 31 landed at No. 11 overall, No. 10 on the Blu-ray chart and No. 8 on the 4K chart, with half its sales from its DVD version and half from its Blu-ray/4K combo pack editions (which were available in both standard and Steelbook packaging). The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a 23rd century warlord who is recruited to join a team of spacefaring secret agents.
