Peter Schmeichel has admitted that he is deeply critical of the decision that Manchester United made over two players in the summer transfer window.

The 61-year-old Manchester United legend insisted that his remarks were “nothing personal” against one key talent, but he was confused with the club’s stance.

Peter Schmeichel also touched on three United players after the Red Devils’ latest Premier League match, which ended in a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

City hosted United at the Etihad on the weekend and Pep Guardiola’s men finally overcame their recent poor run of form to seal all three Premier League points.

Ruben Amorim was left helpless on the Etihad touchline as United offered little in response to City’s lead in the first Manchester derby of the 2025-26 campaign.

Peter Schmeichel singles out Man Utd signing Benjamin Sesko alongside Napoli striker Rasmus Hojlund after the Man City match

Benjamin Sesko’s Manchester United display against Manchester City showed the 22-year-old Slovenian forward experiencing what Rasmus Hojlund had before him.

Rasmus Hojlund, who left Old Trafford and signed on loan for Napoli in the summer, struggled to make a real impact in his first two seasons at the Premier League club.

The 22-year-old Danish forward was defended at times last season over the lack of service he received, which Benjamin Sesko found out for himself in the City match.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Peter Schmeichel was baffled at United’s call to pursue Sesko when Napoli signing Hojlund was already at Old Trafford.

“It’s nothing personal against him [Sesko], I just don’t understand why we had to sign a third striker, or a third person up there,” he said, as per the Metro.

“Rasmus Hojlund has been suffering; he’s been suffocated by the team, never had any service, nothing.

“And now we’ve signed [Matheus] Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo, players who will put the striker in.”

Peter Schmeichel reacts to Rasmus Hojlund’s impact at Napoli after Benjamin Sesko’s Man Utd performance vs Man City

United’s acquisition of Benjamin Sesko in August sealed the fate of Rasmus Hojlund under Ruben Amorim, with Napoli landing the Denmark international on loan.

Hojlund received his debut for Napoli on Saturday and the United loanee netted in the defending Serie A champions’ 3-1 victory over Fiorentina on Saturday.

Schmeichel spotlighted Hojlund’s performance for Napoli at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and was confused at the Red Devils’ decision to offload his fellow Dane.

“Played for Napoli, after 13 minutes he makes a run that he’s made him and time again, the ball came to him and he scored,” he continued.

“Now, you have a young kid who has all that experience, has been through all that, taken all that criticism, fans love him because he’s a fighter, he’s got Manchester United over him.

“I don’t get that, why that swap has happened.”

Napoli’s deal for United striker Hojlund included a clause for a permanent transfer of £38m if certain conditions are met during the 2025-26 Serie A campaign.
