Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy notched up his career-best knock, 169 not out, as Bangladesh piled on the runs to cap off a dominant second day against Ireland in the first Test of the two-match series in Sylhet on Wednesday.
The hosts finished the day at 338-1 at Stumps, leading Ireland by 52 runs, after bundling out the visitors for 286 in the first session. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 80 alongside Joy at the close of play. The duo put together an unbroken 170-run stand after the dismissal of Shadman Islam, who scored 80 before nicking one to the wicket-keeper off the bowling of left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys, bringing an end to a 168-run opening stand between him and Joy.

Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-50, while Hasan Murad (2-47), Taijul Islam (2-78), and Hasan Mahmud (2-42) scalped two wicket each.
Joy picks up a century as Bangladesh pile up the runs
Opener Shadman Islam was dismissed for 80 but Bangladesh were in cruise control, reaching 198 for one in 55 overs at tea on the second day of the Sylhet Test against Ireland.
Shadman was looking in good touch and had smashed nine fours and a six in his innings but couldn’t quite execute a cut-shot properly against the left-arm spin of Matthew Humphreys, managing a faint edge to the keeper. The umpire didn’t give it out, but Ireland reviewed and were eventually vindicated.

The dismissal brought an end to an 168-run opening stand, but it didn’t deter the hosts from extending their command. Mahmudul Hasan Joy, the other opener. was batting on 94 The right-hander, back in the side after some time. was approaching his second Test century on a batting-friendly Sylhet wikcet, having smashed eight fours and a six so far.
Mominul Haque, the new man in, had raced to 21 off 43 when the teams went for the tea break.
Back from tea, Joy reached his century with a boundary as he looked determined to make up for his absence from the side.

Their unbroken stand came at a brisk rate of 4.44 runs per over, with Shadman striking eight fours and a six, bringing up his fifty in 49 deliveries, while Joy played a measured yet fluent knock featuring seven boundaries and a six in 72 balls so far.
Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh wrapped up Ireland’s first innings for 286, taking just 14 balls to claim the last two wickets.
Taijul, Hasan strike as Ireland fold early
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and pacer Hasan Mahmud claimed one wicket each as Bangladesh wrapped up Ireland’s first innings early on the second day of the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Resuming the day at 270 for eight, Ireland were dismissed for 286, facing just 14 balls on the morning of Day 2.
Bangladesh ended the opening day with a sense of relief after their spinners engineered a superb comeback in the final session.
The hosts delivered an impressive bowling performance after tea, seizing four crucial wickets to derail the visiting side. Ireland, who had been cruising at 203 for four, were suddenly pegged back by the relentless spin attack of Taijul Islam, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, and pacer Hasan Mahmud. Mehedi Hasan Miraz was the standout, claiming three of the wickets on the day, while Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam took two wickets each.
