Streaming behemoth Netflix took to Instagram to make the announcement on May 8, stating, “Mark your calendars. The Diplomat arrives on May 9 on Netflix.”
The Shivam Nair directorial is a gripping political thriller, which emphasises the superiority of reasoning and diplomacy over force and conflict.
Based on a real-life event, the film tells the tale of Uzma Ahmed’s journey back to India from Pakistan, using the historical context of both countries as the basis for its plot.
Despite receiving a mediocre response at the box office, the film generated curiosity among fans due to its compelling performances and real-life inspiration.
Fans and new viewers alike may now enjoy the gripping story from the comfort of their homes, courtesy of its Netflix release.
The Diplomat Movie Plot
The film is based on the true story of JP Singh, an Indian diplomat whose life becomes embroiled in a complex web of international diplomacy and personal upheaval after a refugee named Uzma Ahmed arrives at the embassy.
The film deftly examines the moral and ethical challenges that ambassadors usually face when their private lives become deeply entangled with state affairs, posing significant questions about the link between politics, power, and humanity.
Speaking to ANI, Abraham earlier explained why he was drawn to the movie, calling it an “emotional, on-the-edge psychological thriller” as opposed to merely another patriotic tale.
He also pointed out that the movie is not an average India-Pakistan tale and urged viewers to see it from a “humanitarian angle,” as per the Times of India.
