Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy Monday said the standard of Osmania University will be raised to that of Stanford and Oxford, the two premier educational institutions. He also assured to make universities and colleges in the state drug-free.“OU is synonymous with Telangana. The state govt is committed to developing OU and restoring to its former glory. Ask what is needed for university development; prepare estimates and provide them to me,” Revanth said after inaugurating hostels on the campus and launching new fellowship programmes. He also vowed to return to OU in Dec — but without the police bandobast that was in place on Monday. He asked cops to stay out of the varsity premises the next time and let protesters express dissent without fear.“I will hold an open meeting at the Arts College, and sanction funds…Let the opposition parties stage protests during my next visit. I am ready to face them,” Revanth said, addressing a large gathering at the Tagore Auditorium, heavily guarded by men in uniform. He is the first CM to visit the auditorium on the campus after a gap of 20 years.Revanth also hoped for OU to become a role model for other educational institutions and urged students to approach him or his cabinet colleagues, without hesitation, in case of any grievance. “We don’t want to just see graduates pass out of OU. We expect intellectual wealth being created here that will enlighten Telangana society,” said the CM, claiming how despite producing many great minds, there have been conspiracies in the past decade to weaken OU.The CM expressed serious concern over the drug menace in the state and youth’s increasing addiction to ganja. “The problem is across levels—junior and degree colleges, not just universities. I appeal to all to help the youth get rid of addiction,” he said.He reiterated that the govt does not have a land bank or a treasure trove to give to people. “The only thing we can give is education. And, only with education and awareness can one succeed, change their destiny, and become wealthy and virtuous,” the CM added.Box:Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy Monday inaugurated two new hostels, Dhundubhi and Bhima, on the Osmania University campus and laid the foundation stone for a new digital library reading hall and two more hostels.
