GameSir is synonymous with pushing Hall Effect thumbsticks into super affordable PC controllers and it’s back again with the Super Nova, this time promising noise-free ABXY buttons. For just $44.99, you can bag yourself a stylish Hall Effect controller that’s quiet, wireless, and super responsive thanks to a 1,000Hz polling rate.
Whether or not the GameSir Super Nova is good enough to be considered one of the best PC controllers remains to be seen, however, in terms of pure value, it’s hard to argue with what it offers for just a fraction of the price compared to the likes of the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro.
Following on from the Nova and Nova Lite, the GameSir Super Nova brings the same Hall Effect thumbstick, dual rumble motors, RGB lighting, and wireless compatibility as its predecessors but also adds some new features to the table.
The Super Nova adds Hall Effect triggers with trigger stops, a wireless 1,000Hz polling rate, a removable magnetic faceplate, an interchangeable face button layout (for switching between Xbox and Switch layouts), and finally, it also comes with a charging station. Most curious is the face button layout, which also sits on a membrane cushion designed to reduce noise from button presses.
You can use the Super Nova with PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iOS devices via Bluetooth or a wireless 2.4GHz dongle. Full customization of the GameSir Super Nova is also made possible via a desktop and mobile app.
I’m a big advocate for using Hall Effect in both thumbsticks and triggers as it reduces the fail rate of individual sticks due to moving contact parts being taken out of the control and replaced with these magnetized alternatives. In short, the entire Nintendo Switch stick drift saga could have been avoided had Hall Effect sticks been used in Joy-Cons. Stick drift can be all but eliminated entirely using Hall Effect and triggers can become more responsive as seen in controllers like the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro.
