While they rarely push the boundaries of game design or clean up at award ceremonies, Far Cry is a series I always find myself gravitating towards. The hunting, the ridiculous weapons, and the iconic villains manage to provide a reliably enjoyable experience, despite its bloated open-world format. It’s also reliable as a money-maker for Ubisoft, so naturally Far Cry 7 is going to be high on its list of priorities. According to a new report, Ubi has apparently upped its head count and budget for Far Cry 7, but in doing so it has rebooted a standalone Far Cry extraction shooter.
I can definitely see an extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe working. Rumors claim that it will be set in the freezing wilderness of Alaska and be the PvPvE experience you expect from this subgenre of FPS games. As well as other players, you’d face off against AI-controlled soldiers and deadly wildlife. Even though there is huge competition already and a large slate of upcoming extraction shooters, such as Arc Raiders, Marathon, and Exoborne, I think it could do alright for itself. However, a new report claims that the project has been rebooted and has had developers stripped away from it to help Far Cry 7 get over the line.
Insider Gaming claims that the spinoff, codenamed Project Maverick, was initially meant to be a multiplayer component of Far Cry 7 but morphed into its own standalone project in 2023. However, following the internal reviews that have been going on at Ubisoft following poor financial results and high profile flops, Maverick is going “back to prototyping.”
At the same time, many of the developers working on the project have reportedly been shifted over to work on the next mainline Far Cry game to help it stay on track. Insider Gaming’s sources claim that “a 2026 release date is still fairly optimistic” for Far Cry 7, thanks to the new resources it’s been given.
If that’s the case, I wonder if we might see it revealed at some stage this year – potentially during Summer Game Fest or maybe The Game Awards towards the end of 2025. As for the standalone extraction shooter, that now seems like a project that’s now either many years away or one that’ll soon get totally scrapped.
Ubisoft may wait and see how well some of the aforementioned up-and-coming titles do and if they’re able to even challenge established names like Escape From Tarkov and Hunt Showdown before deciding what to do with Maverick. It may even be repurposed into something that isn’t an extraction-based experience. Who knows. But given the company’s recent struggles, it’s no surprise that it’s focusing on its dependable, mainline open-world games rather than an experimental new multiplayer game.
