Factorio: Space Age transports the beloved base-building and automation sandbox game onto other planets, but what if you placed your focus more centrally among the stars? That’s the pitch for Outworld Station, a new space game that’s just landed in early access on Steam. Feeling a little like the halfway house between the row-on-row efficiency of Satisfactory and the galaxy-sprawling ambition of Dyson Sphere Program, it supports up to four-player co-op as you build your intergalactic empire.
Following an initial demo during Steam Next Fest, Outworld Station has now arrived for real. Starting its journey in early access, the space game tasks you with the role of Station Commander in the relatively undeveloped Tau system. Your job is to discover resources that can be exploited to grow your vast industrial complex across the various planets. As with the best sandbox games, you’ll start by mining ores and gathering basic materials that can then help enhance your production process.
Before long, you’re atomizing asteroids, deploying cloud miners, and accumulating alien artifacts, eventually progressing to harnessing the power of wormholes and antimatter to develop the ultimate tech. Lay out supply chains and automated resource gathering and watch it all tick along smoothly.
The Tau system isn’t a place of peace, however; other alien forces are also out to claim its bounties for themselves, meaning you’ll need to handle defensive structures, military starships, and more to ensure you’re able to hold off threats to your stations and populace. As you gather rare materials and uncover alien technologies, you’ll be able to upgrade your buildings and your drone, offering more efficiency, protection, or firepower.
Thankfully, the ability to join forces with up to three other players means you don’t have to go it alone. Bring a few companions along and you can divide the management, exploration, construction, and combat elements between you, making life much easier. Providing you can agree on where to place your facilities, Outworld Station could prove a perfect co-op game if you like to coordinate with others. At a relatively low entry price, it shouldn’t be too hard to get a few friends on board either.
Outworld Station is out now on Steam in early access, with an introductory 10% discount meaning you can buy it for $17.09 / £13.49 through Tuesday April 29. Take a look here. Trickjump Games says it expects early access to last “around a year,” with plans to introduce additional planets, technologies, and enemies, but will extend that period if needed.
