This is the UFC 316 live blog for Kelvin Gastelum vs. Joe Pyfer, the main card middleweight bout Saturday at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Gastelum and Pyfer were originally scheduled to fight at UFC Mexico City on March 29, but an illness forced Pyfer out of that contest, resulting in the matchup being rescheduled.
Having struggled to make the cut down to welterweight for years, Gastelum (18-9, 1 NC) once again finds himself competing at 185 pounds. He is coming off of a win over Daniel Rodriguez—changed from a welterweight bout to a middleweight bout during fight week due to issues on Gastelum’s side—just his third victory in his past nine outings. Gastelum could find himself stuck at a crossroads if he struggles against Pyfer.
Pyfer (13-3) finished his first three UFC opponents after being signed off of Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, but hit a speed bump when he dropped a decision to Jack Hermansson. He rebounded in impressive fashion with a first-round knockout of Marc-Andre Barriault at UFC 303 and now seeks to knock off a one-time interim title challenger and further establish himself as a middleweight contender.
