The Dead by Daylight anniversary livestream is always bursting with exciting announcements, and this year is no exception. Amid new collabs and info on the highly anticipated FNAF chapter, Behaviour revealed Choose Your Own Chapter, a new, original DLC completely shaped by the ever-passionate DBD community, and we caught up with the team to learn a little more about it.
In an interview with PCGamesN, Dead by Daylight game director Mathieu Cote explains how the horror game’s upcoming chapter was inspired by the ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ books of his youth. “I read [them] a lot when I was a kid, and a few people I’m sure [used them] as a gateway to Dungeons and Dragons and other RPGs.”
“The idea is that… in the weeks following [PAX], we’ll start a big narrative; a story that we will tell, including some branching options,” Cote continues. “We’ll invite everybody in the community to vote on these branches. This will not only create a really cool story, but will educate the concept and direction of both the killer and survivor from this original chapter.”
For example, there might be options as to whether the chapter is futuristic, modern, or historical. It could be sci-fi or classic slasher, or, as Cote suggests: “A mundane guy who’s just really, really mean.” From here, the dev team will create a new killer and survivor. If you’re worried about what you might miss out on, though, Behaviour has a plan to prevent FOMO with its ‘Change Your Fate’ mechanic.
This mechanic comes from the aforementioned ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ books, in which you’d have the option to look ahead. Cote reminisces, “You’d have the choice to go to page 37 for this option or page 35 or whatever. You go and take a peek at the options and then you choose so you don’t die immediately. We want to do something like that. Obviously, in our narrative, there will be no wrong answers, but whenever we give people a choice, we will let them take a peek at what the other branch would have led to, so people can maybe go back on their decision and choose the other path.” Wrapping up, Cote concludes, “I think it’s going to be quite a fun ride to go on with our community.” I’m inclined to agree.
As Cote mentions, the Choose Your Own Chapter choices will begin in just a few weeks, but the content itself is obviously a way off. Dead by Daylight’s Choose Your Own Chapter is set to release in 2026. Given DBD’s usual calendar of events, then, we expect it to drop around May 2026.
While this is big news, it might not be enough to topple the DBD FNAF chapter, arriving in just a few weeks.
