“Accidental” Vampire Survivors expansion Legacy of the Bloodmoon is the original tale I’ve been craving, for just $1

New Vampire Survivors DLC Legacy of the Bloodmoon marks a return for developer Poncle to the good old days of original expansions. Having exploded onto the scene and helped escalate the ‘bullet heaven’ genre of chaotic wave survival roguelites to fitting heights, the studio found itself awash with collaboration offers, and has since teamed up with Among Us, Balatro, and even Castlevania. Now, however, it’s time to return to the extremely serious lore of Vampire Survivors itself – and you won’t have to break the bank.

Legacy of the Bloodmoon was an accident. Originally, Poncle had intended to simply inject a “little content update” into Legacy of the Moonspell, the first Vampire Survivors DLC, in order to bring it up to the size of subsequent add-ons. “Needless to say, ideas started to flow and everything spiraled into a much bigger project,” studio founder Luca Galante remarks. “I’m not sure I’ll ever learn at this stage. In the end, Legacy of the Moonspell will be getting its content buff (seven new unlocks), and Legacy of the Bloodmoon will live a life of its own.”

The new expansion follows Clan Bloodmoon, led by “ruthless matron” Malice and Calogero, “the heinous beast,” in their search for the ancient lair of a group called the Order of the Red Moon. Founded by the sinister Saint Baal’Thasar, it speaks of promises of a land of eternal life. With its leader vanished and the faction spread into fringe sects, can the steps of Baal’Thasar’s pilgrimage be retraced and this promised secret to immortality be found?

As crucial to the experience as the story of Vampire Survivors is, the real business is what’s new: 12 characters, 16-plus weapons and evolutions, an adventure, a “very large” stage, eight more music tracks, and some additional “interesting bits and bobs” that Galante is currently keeping under wraps. Malice impales her foes with paralyzing Scarlet Needles, Calogero puts his massive axe to work, and there’s even a new tool called the FireBall.

Vampire Survivors: Legacy of the Bloodmoon launches Friday, August 28, 2026, priced at $0.99 (or your regional equivalent). You can find it right here. Alongside this, its older companion DLC Legacy of the Moonspell has already had its price slashed to match.

I’ve enjoyed watching Vampire Survivors dance through a wild selection of crossovers, but for as much as we joke about how totally serious its lore is, I do have a lot of affinity for the game’s core designs, and I’m glad Poncle is taking the time to build on that again with Legacy of the Bloodmoon.
