Adventures of Elliot’s new update finally lets you silence Faie

Square Enix’s latest RPG, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, is a charming HD-2D Zelda-like with almost nothing offensive about its familiar design. I say “almost” because there has been one major criticism the game has received since it was released on June 18: characters won’t shut up! Nearly a month after launch, Square Enix is finally fixing the problem.

The Adventures of Elliot Version 1.1.0 was released this morning, and while the list of changes is short, they are by no means small. The full patch notes, which are available on the game’s Steam page, only take up four bullet points. The first is the most important: “Adds an option to turn off support character voice.” This change will impact the main companion character Faie, a Navi-like fairy who constantly comments on the game world. Faie’s incessant chatter was one of the biggest complaints Square Enix received immediately upon the release of the demo for the game.

The main issue with Faie’s ever-present dialogue is the perception that it takes away from some of the game’s exploration and discovery. If Faie is constantly shouting out hints about puzzles or observing secrets in the world, then it feels like the player is being pushed through the experience.

Producer Naofumi Matsushita told Kotaku that this feedback “surprised” the team, who had grown to love Faie over the course of development. In response to player feedback, Square Enix included an option at the game’s launch that allowed the frequency of Faie’s dialogue to be decreased. That apparently was not enough of a fix to the problem, and now players can fully turn Faie’s dialogue off in Version 1.1.0.

Even with Faie’s chatter, there is a lot to love about The Adventures of Elliot. The game feels like a SNES classic remade in Square Enix’s beautiful HD-2D engine. Here’s what we said about it in our review:

I can’t say it does anything particularly revolutionary by the standards of 2026. But the pacing is tight, the boss fights are wonderfully varied, the puzzles are just crunchy enough, and the music and visuals bring to mind a fairy-tale storybook. While the game spans four distinct time periods, the compact map and 25-hour runtime invite exploration without ever feeling daunting.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
