The team behind an ambitious Counter-Strike: Global Offensive mod has delayed the project’s release, claiming that Valve has contacted them over concerns that it might not comply with the company’s guidelines. Classic Offensive has been in the works since 2016, with a dedicated group of fans aiming to bring back the feeling of Counter-Strike 1.6 by changing the weapons, sounds, and stats of the multiplayer shooter.

Earlier this year, the Classic Offensive team released a statement alleging that Valve had blocked the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive mod from coming to Steam. The modders submitted Classic Offensive to Steamworks in October 2024, only for it to be retired this January without any notice. Since then, the Classic Offensive mod has been gearing up for an off-Steam release, but right as the team got ready for the FPS game to launch, Valve allegedly contacted them again.

“We were contacted by Valve this morning,” a new post from the Classic Offensive team on Wednesday March 12 begins. “They have reached out to us with concerns that our mod may no longer be compliant with their guidelines and the Steam Subscriber Agreement. In light of these concerns, we are auditing the current build of the mod to ensure nothing in it is in violation of those guidelines.”

One member of the mod’s team, ‘ZooL’, then says on Twitter/X that the problem is “redistribution related,” while adding that this happened “literally 17 hours before release but [to be fair] they might be correct.” We’ve reached out to Valve to confirm if it’s contacted the Classic Offensive team, and what this could mean for the mod’s release.

According to ZooL, it sounds as though the original plan was for Classic Offensive to launch, outside of Steam, around March 12. As for the Steam Subscriber Agreement, it’s a document that every user agrees to by registering for an account on the platform. It does contain sections on third-party and user generated content, which the Classic Offensive mod may be in violation of.

As of right now, though, Classic Offensive isn’t releasing while the mod’s team makes sure it doesn’t violate any Steam and Valve guidelines.
