AMD is reportedly considering halting production of a new gaming GPU that was apparently lined up to cost just $299. According to a quoted partner of the company, the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB could now be lined up for the chop, possibly as a result of seeing the press reaction to the 8GB version of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 Ti.
The AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT is heavily rumored to be in line for a launch in the second quarter of 2025 (April to June), with most 9060 XT leaks pointing to both 16GB and 8GB cards being available. However, as I found in my RTX 5060 Ti review, there are significant benefits to having 16GB of VRAM on a mid-range GPU now, as it means you can enable high settings in demanding games that you simply can’t achieve with just 8GB.
This latest leak comes from a quoted anonymous AMD partner who reportedly spoke to YouTube tech leaker Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) about the new GPU, which you can see in the video below. “I just reached out to my AMD rep, and he confirmed that there is a possibility that the 8GB model of the 9060 XT could indeed get cancelled…or at a minimum have production, that is already underway, at least halted,” says the quoted partner.
The quote goes on to clarify that the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB is unlikely to be completely cancelled, saying that “AMD is likely to still technically launch the RX 9060 XT 8GB, since it is already in production.” However, they add that AMD “will probably phase it out VERY quickly if sales are bad and save the bad yields for a much cheaper ‘RX 9050 XT 8GB’ to be launched later in 2025.”
This implies that the cheaper Radeon RX 9050 XT that’s rumored to be coming out later in the year will be based on the same core RDNA 4 GPU as the 9060 XT, but with some of its compute units disabled. MLID also reiterated the leaked pricing for the GPU, which he claims stands at $299 for the 9060 XT 8GB and $329-379 for the 16GB card.
What’s interesting here is that, at $299, the 8GB card could still technically be competitive, seeing as that’s identical to the RTX 5060 price recently announced by Nvidia, and this GPU also only has 8GB of VRAM. At $379, however, the 16GB card would be priced only $50 below the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, and it would have to be really competitive to win this battle.
All of the above does need to be taken with a hefty grain of salt, however, as MLID is very hit and miss when it comes to the accuracy of his leaks. For instance, he landed himself in trouble in 2024 when he published a purported AMD Zen 5 slide leak, which was later revealed to be a fake made by X (formerly Twitter) user Bionic Squash.
This strategy would make sense to me, though – 8GB of VRAM is more appropriate for a $199-$249 card than a $299 one in 2025, and AMD need a strong competitor against the new Nvidia RTX 5060-series GPUs. If it can offer a Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB for $329 then it could be in with a shot, especially as AMD’s new RDNA 4 architecture is now seriously powerful, as I found in my Radeon RX 9070 XT review.
