When it comes to the question of turning your brain off after a long day, American Truck Simulator is one of the best answers. The Steam megahit boasts a 97% positive rating from over 140,000 user reviews, and offers up a colossal approximation of the United States for you to get lost in. It’s engaging, but gives you just enough freedom to zone out and let your mind wander as you travel across the states. If driving around 30,000 pounds of metal is too much for you, however, the team at SCS Software has something entirely new planned.
Back in March, American Truck Simulator developer SCS Software dropped a cryptic teaser for the future of the game. It was less than a minute of vehicle engine noises, and as you’d expect, this left us with a lot of questions. Well, now we know what the team has been cooking up, and it’s set to completely reshape how you experience the studio’s virtual recreation of the United States.
SCS calls it ‘Project Road Trip.’ This new feature will, hopefully, give everyone access to an array of new vehicles outside the remit of 18-wheeler cargo haulers. The vast landscapes of ATS are filled with accurate geographical and architectural detail, and this road trip concept will show it all to you from a slightly lower perspective. The simulation game is about to change completely.
“Once introduced, it should allow players to enjoy the vast landscapes of ATS not only from the cab of an 18-wheeler but also from behind the wheel of, say, a powerful pickup or even a sports car. We hope this new perspective will appeal not only to long-time players but also to those who may be discovering the world of ATS for the first time,” SCS Software writes.
“Our vision for Road Trip goes well beyond simply introducing new types of vehicles. We’re also exploring fresh gameplay opportunities—ways to give players a reason to drive them. That might mean taking on new kinds of tasks and jobs, or simply enjoying the open road, discovering landmarks, and soaking in the scenery.”
SCS also clarifies the Road Trip concept is still very much in the early stages, with discussions happening internally, so it won’t be sharing many of the minute details just yet. The studio adds that the Road Trip idea has its own dedicated team, so “core trucking content” isn’t slowing down at all. That means new trucks, trailers, updates, and map expansions – like the recent Missouri DLC – will be unaffected by this new direction.
