Best Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Pictos – all Pictos and how to level up

What are the best Expedition 33 Pictos? These equippable accessories provide stat bonuses and passive effects to your Expedition members. Each character can equip up to three Pictos at a time, and after four turns, you can enable their passive effects across your party.

The best Pictos in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 benefit all characters across the board regardless of their various strengths and abilities, and many of them are a staple feature on the best Clair Obscur builds overall. We’ve tracked down all Pictos in the turn-based RPG to bring you the best ones for each character, so you can locate and equip them for hidden synergies.

Best Expedition 33 Pictos

There are over 100 Pictos to collect in Expedition 33. Some offer passive effects that benefit a specific character’s kit, while others encourage experimentation. However, the best Pictos can be useful in all build permutations, and are all but essential to activate with Lumina points.

Here are the best Expedition 33 Pictos:

  • Dodger
  • Energising Parry
  • Sweet Kill
  • Empowering Attack
  • Healing Fire
  • Beneficial Contamination
  • Powerful On Shell
  • Greater Powerful
  • Breaker
  • Energising Break
  • Energising Turn
  • Augmented Counter
  • Cheater
  • Gradient Fighter
  • Second Chance

A team attacking in Clair Obscur.

Dodger

Effect: +1 AP on perfect dodge. Once per turn.
How to get: Defeat the Portier in Spring Meadows.

Dodger is one of the first Pictos you pick up on your journey, but don’t underestimate it. This powerful Pictos allows characters to rapidly accumulate bonus AP outside their turn, allowing them to execute an attack combo or cast powerful finishers. This can benefit any character, particularly those with weaker parries, since it demands constant dodging to maximize its Lumina effect.

Energising Parry

Effect: +1 AP on successful parry.
How to get: Defeat the Chromatic Luster boss in Forgotten Battlefield.

If you prefer to parry rather than dodge, then Energising Parry is an ideal alternative to Dodger. Functionally, its Lumina passive works the same way: perform a successful parry, receive an ability point. However, unlike Dodger, it isn’t restricted to once per turn, making it a parry master’s dream. You could also run with both Lumina passives active on one character with AP-hungry skills.

Sweet Kill

Effect: Recover 50% health on killing an enemy.
How to get: Purchase from the Gestral Merchant in Renoir’s Drafts after fighting them.

Taking a turn to heal injured allies can seem like a waste, especially if it causes you to miss a combo window. Sweet Kill mitigates the chances of that situation by rewarding you with health for going on the offensive. It’s also very cheap to activate, which means your entire party can run it in no time. Even better? You can switch out any extraneous healing skills for offensive alternatives instead.

Empowering Attack

Effect: Gain Powerful for one turn on base attack.
How to get: Purchase from the Gestral Merchant in Sacred River after fighting them.

No matter how much AP replenishment you build into each character, there inevitably comes a time when you have to take a break from skills and rely on a good old-fashioned basic attack. Empowering Attack is made for these moments, effectively turning your least effective attack into a one-turn buff, so you can hit harder the turn after that.

Fighting in a street in Clair Obscur.

Healing Fire

Effect: Recover 25% health when attacking a burning target. Once per turn.
How to get: Retrieve from a corpse on the path to the right of the Crumbling Path fast travel point in Sirene.

Attacks that inflict Burn appear in every character’s skill tree, and given how common it is as a weakness, the odds are you’ll be running at least one character who fulfils that requirement. Healing Fire is an excellent choice for a supplementary heal when attacking once per turn. Between Healing Fire and Sweet Kill, you’ll rarely need to fall back on healing skills and tints.

Beneficial Contamination

Effect: +2 AP on applying a status effect. Once per turn.
How to get: Purchase from the Gestral Merchant near the Resinveil Grove fast travel point in Falling Leaves.

Extending the uptime on Burn application to trigger Healing Fire or other Burn-based Pictos may occasionally cause your attack rotation to stall. Beneficial Contamination grants you an additional two ability points once per turn. This works particularly well for Maelle, Verso, and Lune given their capacity to inflict Burn, Mark, and Stun.

Powerful On Shell

Effect: Apply Powerful on applying Shell.
How to get: Defeat the Benisseur past the Dancing Classes fast travel point in Sirene.

Powerful On Shell imbues your most defensive skills with an offensive buff, so you can make up for any potential downtime or damage taken by hitting even harder next turn. You could pair this with damage mitigation Pictos like SOS Shell, Auto Shell, or Protecting Death, but we prefer to kick off any fight with Maelle’s Guard Up to reap the benefits of Powerful On Shell across a full battle.

Greater Powerful

Effect: +15% to Powerful damage increase.
How to get: Purchase from the Gestral Merchant near the Crumbling Path fast travel point in Sirene.

Powerful is one of the best buffs in battle, offering a 25% damage boost while active. Greater Powerful takes that up to 40%, ensuring that even the weakest attacks still pack a real punch. It has excellent synergy with Empowering Attack, so we recommend running both simultaneously if you need to employ your basic attack often.

Fighting a monster in the dust in Clair Obscur.

Breaker

Effect: 25% increased Break damage.
How to get: Defeat Ultimate Sakapatate in Ancient Sanctuary.

This Pictos is a must-have for any dedicated breakers in your party, whether that’s Verso, Lune, or Maelle. Its Lumina passive applies a flat-rate bonus to your Break damage, which makes all the difference for expensive skills like Verso’s Perfect Break or Lune’s Crustal Crush.

Energising Break

Effect: +3 AP on Breaking an enemy.
How to get: On the path near the Chromatic Troubadour in Flying Waters.

Energising Break is a great way to support your main breaker further, automatically bestowing them with three ability points upon breaking an enemy. The Lumina Point cost is also pretty negligible, so you can likely justify applying it to anyone with a break skill in their kit.

Energising Turn

Effect: +1 AP on turn start.
How to get: Defeat Sirene in Sirene, or purchase from the Gestral Merchants in either Sacred River or Renoir’s Drafts after fighting them.

Your party can never have enough AP, especially as you begin to unlock more expensive skills. Energising Turn gives you an additional ability point at the beginning of your turn, letting you ramp faster. The only downside to this Pictos is the high Lumina cost it takes to apply across the entire team, but it’s well worth taking up a Pictos slot for your heaviest hitter.

Augmented Counter

Effect: 35% increased counterattack damage.
How to get: Defeat the Bourgeon in Flying Waters or Flying Manor, or purchase from the Gestral Merchant in Renoir’s Drafts after fighting them.

Another one for the parry aficionados, Augmented Counter’s bonus Counterattack damage is particularly effective against evasive enemies that can dodge out of the way of direct damage. This Lumina passive has obvious synergy with Energising Parry, and can occasionally let you clear the field before you even take a turn.

Fighting in a snowy location in Clair Obscur.

Cheater

Effect: Always play twice in a row.
How to get: Defeat Sprong on The Continent, near Crimson Forest.

What’s better than one turn? Two turns. Cheater is a tough Pictos to get, but once you have it, the world’s your oyster. Use that additional turn in combat to spend excess ability points instead of free aim, inflict a basic attack for more AP and optional buffs like Empowering Attack, or make use of Picto buffs with turn start conditions. Cheater’s only drawback is its extortionate Lumina cost to activate its passive effect, so stick to one character.

Painted Power

Effect: Damage can exceed 9,999.
How to get: Defeat the boss at the Monolith Peak in The Monolith

As you transition from mid-to-late game, you’re likely to bump up against Expedition 33’s damage cap. While it’s satisfying to see a flurry of nines whenever you attack, it also indicates that excess damage is being left on the table – especially when enemy health pools balloon to match. Painted Power lifts that restriction, giving potent damage dealers the chance to reach their full potential.

Gradient Fighter

Effect: +25 increased damage with Gradient attacks.
How to get: Defeat the Aberrations to the left of the Lumiere’s Garden fast travel point in Lumiere.

Gradient attacks are some of the most potent available to your expedition members, so don’t miss out on the chance to bolster their damage further with Gradient Fighter. This Pictos is also surprising cheap to activate, so remember to apply it to every party member to reap its benefits across the board.

Second Chance

Effect: Revive with 100% health. Once per battle.
How to get: Defeat Renoir at the Tower Peak in The Monolith.

Nothing can disrupt your party’s attack rotation more than the surprise death of an expedition member. At best, you have to waste another character’s turn to revive them; at worst, they stay dead, and you have to muddle through the fight without their skills. Second Chance is an instant revival, which makes it a must-have Pictos for your glass cannons.

How to level up Pictos in Expedition 33

Unlike Expedition 33 weapons, there is no direct way to level up Pictos in Clair Obscur. Instead, higher level variants or duplicates can drop from specific bosses and enemies, though these are quite rare.

Pictos with variants of II, III, or IV include improvements to their level, stats and passive. These variants are individual Pictos that can be swapped out, though their Lumina activation cost is also higher. Duplicate Pictos raise the level and stats of the existing Pictos in your inventory, though the core passive effect remains the same.

Now that you have the best Pictos equipped, don’t forget to pair them with the best Clair Obscur attributes for your Expedition members. If you’re ready to delve into the fantasy game, check out how long Expedition 33 is, along with our Clair Obscur Expedition 33 review for a taste of what awaits you on the Continent.
