If you enjoy games like Vampire Survivors and Brotato, then mutating horde-survival roguelike Bioprototype is worth a look. With 24 unique characters, more than 80 organs, and the ability to adjust your own skill triggers, it offers a tremendous amount of build variety wrapped in a distinctive, fleshy theme. If you crave a little more depth and strategy while retaining the core of the auto-attacking format, Bioprototype has just returned to Steam, and you can get it completely free if you add it to your account in the next few weeks.
Bioprototype developer Emprom says that the roguelike was removed from the Valve storefront in early 2024 when its publisher, BD Games, broke Steam rules. “Since we’re not the administrator of the publisher team, we’re unable to know the details of the violation,” it explains. “As a result, their Steam account was permanently banned, and all games they published (including ours) were removed forever.” It adds that the regulation infringement “had nothing to do with our team or Bioprototype.”
Since then, a sequel called Bioweaver has been released, independently published by Emprom itself, yet the original has been absent until now. “We regret that some players mistakenly believed the still-available Bioweaver to be a rebranded Bioprototype,” Emprom writes. It says that the game’s return was delayed by an anti-price discrimination agreement it had signed with the original publisher, preventing it from being released for free.
“Early on, we forced players into an Epic key solution due to Steam’s key limit,” it continues. “We ignored that many players prefer Steam, and this decision was careless. We are truly sorry.” Now, however, Bioprototype is finally able to make its comeback as a free Steam game, and you’ve got two months to add it to your account without having to pay a thing.
