We’ve already had a packed start to the year. Dynasty Warriors: Origins gives you plenty of Musou action, Monster Hunter Wilds offers daring hunts with larger-than-life foes, and Split Fiction gives you a fantastic co-op experience. Meanwhile, A Game About Digging A Hole is a game about, well, digging a hole, and if you’ve not heard of it, you’re missing out. Today’s your lucky day though, because it’s available for under $4 right now.
Maybe I’m being a little hyperbolic with my belief that A Game About Digging A Hole will be Game of the Year, but as far as sandbox games go, this indie gem is exactly what it says on the tin – you dig holes. There’s no plot twist, no big reveals where a mastermind villain tricked you into filling holes instead – you’re just a normal person, mining into the ground for some jewels and it’s fantastic.
The premise is as basic as they come. You see an advert for a house that promises buried treasure, and for the low price of $10,000, you buy the home in the hopes of finding some valuable secrets within your yard (but to be honest, I’d much rather just own a house for $10k – who cares about jewels if you managed to get on the property ladder so easily?).
Equally simple is the gameplay, which sees you start by mining your dirt with cheap tools, selling valuables, and upgrading them to reach further into the pits of your front yard. Over time, you’ll acquire better tools, allowing you to store more ores and last longer in your makeshift mineshafts, but beware of the battery life, or it’ll explode, dropping your health and removing your stored copper and silver.

It’s certainly one of the most interesting indie games I’ve played in recent memory, and it’s made for a great palette cleanser after hours of fighting creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds. While the runtime may be fairly short, I’ve praised games like I Am Your Beast, which offers around the same amount of playtime at over triple the price.
If you’re into games like Powerwash Simulator or other single-player games in a similar vein, you can grab A Game About Digging A Hole for just $3.74 / £3.21 on Fanatical. It’s 25% off for a limited time, but considering it’s only $4.99 /£4.29 at retail, I still think it’s worth buying even if you happen to miss out on this excellent deal.
A Game About Digging A Hole is proof that the best PC games sometimes come in strange packages, and for under $4 / £4, you shouldn’t miss out. Alternatively, you can check out our list of the best building games if you want something similar, but with more creativity over destruction.
