It’s been teased for a long while, but EA has finally revealed the identity of its upcoming Star Wars tactics game. Titled Star Wars Zero Company, it’s been a hotly anticipated project, especially from fans of XCOM, and while all we’ve got right now is a name and a bit of key art, a full gameplay reveal is just around the corner.
A turn-based strategy game set in the Star Wars universe is a truly tantalizing prospect, and now finally we have something to call it other than ‘Star Wars XCOM.’ Well, I presume it’ll be like XCOM anyway, given the genre and who’s making it. Star Wars Zero Company is being developed by Bit Reactor, a studio that’s home to well over a dozen former Firaxis devs that worked on the iconic tactics series. Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi Survivor dev Respawn Entertainment is also lending a hand.
Today’s initial reveal of the Zero Company confirms that it’ll be a single-player game. The official Star Wars website also says that you’ll “recruit an unconventional team of operatives and deploy them on missions unlike any other in the galaxy far, far away.” The lone piece of concept art released gives you a flavour of the characters and units that you’ll find in the game, featuring a Mandalorian, a Clone Trooper, some kind of R-series droid that I’m nowhere near geeky enough to fully identify, and more.
EA says that a first look at the game will take place during the upcoming Star Wars Celebration event, which this year is hosted in Japan. It doesn’t specifically say exactly what will be revealed, but that sounds a lot like we’ll get to see at least a little bit of gameplay. I think there’s a good chance we’ll get some kind of cinematic or conceptual trailer too that’ll confirm when in the Star Wars timeline, and where in the universe, the action takes place.
Star Wars Zero Company will be fully revealed during Star Wars Celebration on Saturday, April 19 at 12:30 am PDT / 3:30 am EDT / 8:30am BST / 9:30am CEST / 4:30pm JST.
